When you start taking your first steps in the audiovisual world, it is one of the first items you look to acquire. However, what type of video camera do we need? In today's market, there are hundreds of options, which can be overwhelming when it comes to choosing. That's why we've created a mini-guide to help you pick the perfect camera based on how you'll use it, whether you're a beginner or a professional.<\/span><\/p>\n

What should we know about a video camera?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Before starting to look for the camera we are going to buy, it is important to understand certain basic characteristics. To do this, it is useful to know the evolution of cameras. In their early days, they used a system of electrical tubes made up of thermionic valves. A beam of electrons, combined with a lens system, formed the images.<\/span><\/p>\n

A video camera, on the other hand, not only allows you to take photos, but also records images and sounds, converting them into electrical signals that can be played back by a specific device. To capture the image, we need light. Light particles, photons, emanate from their source, bounce off the subject and are captured by the camera's lens.<\/span><\/p>\n

The video, therefore, consists of storing a series of images taken in sequence which, when played back one after another, create the illusion of movement. A single second of video contains, at a minimum, 21 frames. This is one of the fundamental differences with celluloid, which contains 24 frames per second, and with television, which can reach up to 60 FPS. The sharpness of the video and the smoothness of the image depend on the number of frames per second.<\/span><\/p>\n

Main parts<\/h2>\n

Now that we've gained a better understanding of how a video camera works, let's look at its components to better understand which one to choose for our purposes. All of its features will help us understand what we need from it and to sacrifice certain requirements for others:<\/p>\n

Objective<\/h3>\n

This set of lenses is responsible for directing light rays towards the sensor, thereby creating the image you wish to capture.<\/p>\n

Diaphragm<\/h3>\n

Located within the lens, its mission is to regulate the intensity of light reaching the sensor. It is one of the most important parts of a video camera.<\/p>\n

Sensor<\/h3>\n

Inside the camera, it captures the light rays that come through the lens.<\/p>\n

Visor<\/h3>\n

It allows us to preview the environment before capturing the image. This way we can focus and frame the image as we wish without necessarily having to take the photo.<\/p>\n

Shutter<\/h3>\n

It is used to analyse and control the time that the sensor is exposed to light.<\/p>\n

Screen<\/h3>\n

The viewfinder allows us to preview the environment, while the screen, located on the back of the camera, helps us to view the image before taking the shot and to review the photo after it has been taken. Furthermore, the screen allows camera information to be displayed, as well as access to the menu and its settings.<\/p>\n

Control buttons and dials<\/h3>\n

Modern video cameras are usually equipped with various buttons and dials, the functionalities of which vary depending on the manufacturer. However, there are certain controls that are common on most cameras, such as the power on and\/or off button, the shutter button, the one that helps us view images already taken, and the one used to access the camera's menu.<\/p>\n

      What to consider when choosing a video camera<\/b><\/h2>\n

      Choosing a video camera isn't a simple task given the wide range of options available on the market. Therefore, it's important to pay close attention to all its features, especially those we've mentioned previously, and consider which ones are most necessary for our use. Additionally, it's useful to review all its qualities, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n
